The Miser
My cassette, my money's been stolen... There's one missing!

First performed in Paris at the Palais Royal on 6 August 1666 by the Troupe du Roi, this is Molière’s most famous farce!
Sganarelle is a drunken, facetious woodcutter whose wife Martine passes him off as a mad doctor who only recognises himself as a doctor after being beaten. The result is a frenetic series of misunderstandings and irresistible situational comedies.
‘Because Le Médecin malgré lui is the play that made me love theatre… Because Sganarelle resembles the exuberant, comic and poetic characters straight out of Russian folklore that were part of my childhood with my Babushka…
Accordions, guitars, songs, harmonica, cajon and balalaikas are the ingredients of this colourful, joyful show!’ Charlotte Matzneff – director

TÉLÉRAMA TT “From misunderstandings to beatings, this three-act comedy by Molière is a farce. Charlotte Matzneff adds a touch of Russian folklore to the comedy, with costumes, music, dance and a good deal of exuberance to match the character of Sganarelle, particularly his vigour and loquaciousness. Eight actors create a lively adaptation for the whole family to enjoy.”
LA MUSE “Charlotte Matzneff, making her directorial debut here, provides excellent entertainment: The violent scenes, mimed with games of hide-and-seek, become jokes at which we laugh heartily. The audience is carried away by the festive atmosphere of this show, where music and song accompany the texts. As for the costumes, all in shades of red, they reinforce the warm, cheerful character of the whole.”
WEBTHEATRE “The classics performed by Le Grenier de Babouchka are of the highest quality. In Sganarelle chez les Russkoffs, we are not afraid to revive farce with its conventions and its art of getting straight to the point, as in a fairground boxing match, without detours. The characters are hungry for pleasure, happiness and success. The acting by Stéphane Dauch (the perfect Sganarelle), Sylvie Cavé and Patrick Causse, to name but a few, is raw, spirited, sometimes brutal and fiery.” Gilles Costaz
