The Cid

Cloak and dagger, love and honour, a dilemma in alexandrine and music.

About

Chimène and Rodrigue are madly in love. Like Romeo and Juliet, their destiny is thwarted by their respective families. We're right in the middle of a story of flesh and blood: passion, revenge and betrayal bring our emotions to a climax in this epic play.

We are in Castile where «honour is a duty, love is a pleasure».». Our two young heroes will prove to us, through their cries, tears, sacrifices and courage, that love is the cure for all our ills.

Press coverage

FIGAROSCOPE ♥♥♥♥ « While respecting the text, the actors from Le Grenier de Babouchka have remarkable diction, and the alexandrines are delivered with great accuracy. Highly recommended!»

TÉLÉRAMA TT «A must-see and enjoy!»

LE JOURNAL DU DIMANCHE ♥♥♥ « A cloak-and-dagger Cid»

HER «Everything is there to make you love the epic of Rodrigue and Chimène!»

LE PARISIEN «We can't recommend this dynamic show enough!»

FEMALE VERSION «Each actor brings the verse to life, making it resonate with the pleasure of a show for everyone aged 10 and upwards. A great opportunity to brush up on your classics».»

LA CROIX «In Jean-Philippe DAGUERRE's elegant and inventive staging, Corneille's tragicomedy is energetic, poignant and funny. The king's slurred speech is a comic find. Elvire, the maid, is a marvel of mischievous intelligence. The two young leads interpret the couple imagined by Corneille with accuracy and passion (...) they captivate the audience with the fluid beauty of their alexandrines. The Spanish music performed on stage by Petr Ruzicka and Antonio Matias adds rhythm and depth.»

L'OFFICIEL DES SPECTACLES «The perfectly harmonious cast gives Corneille's verse just the right amount of humanity and accuracy to make it a success.»

PARISCOPE «Generous actors, talented musicians, beautifully-crafted costumes, fiery energy and fighting. Your children will no longer tell you that classical theatre is boring!»

RFI «Breath... and heart!»

THE CRITICISM «A moment of pure grace.»

LES TROIS COUPS.FR «The comedy is everywhere in this version, making us smile, sometimes laugh, without ever feeling that we are committing a sacrilege. Because the tragedy slips in where it can, in unexpected corners, and is all the more powerful for it. There's also suspense, theatrics and the action-film feel, happily underpinned by the collaboration with fencing master Christophe Mie, a former member of the French sabre team. The irony of the occasional good fight is kept in check by Petr Ruzicka's inventive score. Finally, the palette of reds in Virginie Houdinière's costumes is exhilaratingly cheerful.»
